abstract A polymer latex binder useful in a latex coating composition with low VOC content or zero content, comprising: a) a polymer that is a polymerization product of at least: i) at least one polymerizable polyalkylene glycol monomer which corresponds to structural formula (I): (I) R1- (XO) x- R2 wherein R1 is a first polymerizable moiety selected from the group consisting of (meth) acrylate, allyl, vinyl, maleate, itaconate and fumarate, X it is a C2-C3 divalent alkylene group, x is from 2 to 50, and R2 is H or CH3; ii) at least one acrylic monomer that can be copolymerized with the polymerizable polyalkylene glycol monomer; iii) at least one polymerizable polyalkylene glycol monomer of structural formula (II): (II) Ph- (OY) n-R6 wherein Ph is a phenyl group substituted at positions 2, 4 and 6 with groups R3, R4 and R5 respectively, R3, R4 and R5 being selected independently from the group consisting of butyl, tert-butyl, isobutyl, -CH2-A, and -CH (CH3) -A, where A is phenyl or cyclohexyl, where Y is a divalent hydrocarbon radical comprising a linear or branched alkylene radical having from 2 to 8 carbon atoms; where n is an integer from 1 to 100; and wherein R6 is a second polymerizable moiety selected from the group consisting of (meth) acrylate, allyl, vinyl, maleate, itaconate and fumarate; b) water; and c) at least one emulsifier;
