Use of a compound represented by the following general formula (1) as a light-emitting compound or a compound in a light-emitting layer containing a host: ** Formula ** 10 wherein in the general formula (1), al minus one from R1 to R5 represents a cyano group, at least one from R1 to R5 represents a substituted or unsubstituted 9-carbazolyl group, a substituted or unsubstituted 1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-9-carbazolyl group, a substituted or unsubstituted 1-indolyl group, or substituted or unsubstituted diarylamino group represented by the following general formula (11), and the remainder of R1 to R5 represents a hydrogen atom or a substituent; ** Formula ** where in the general formula (11), R21 to R28 each independently represent a hydrogen atom or a substituent, provided that if the substituent from R21 to R28 is an aryl group, then such an aryl group has 6 to 15 carbon atoms, and provided that at least one of the following requirements (A) and (B) is met: (A) R25 and R26 together form a single bond, and (B) R27 and R28 together form an atomic group that is required to form a substituted or unsubstituted benzene ring. |
