abstract An in vitro procedure to identify, from a biological fluid sample of a pregnant female, a pregnancy-related syndrome selected from the group consisting of preeclampsia of early onset, eclampsia and hemolysis, increased liver enzymes and thrombocytopenia (HELLP), including the procedure (i) measuring the amount of ESM-1 in the biological sample, proceeding the biological sample of the pregnant female in any one of the weeks 9-16 of gestation; (ii) compare said amount of ESM-1 with a reference value, and (iii) identify, based on the comparison of the amount of ESM-1 with the reference value, if it is probable that the female has or develops the syndrome related to pregnancy, said biological fluid sample comprising a blood sample, a plasma sample or a serum sample of said pregnant female.
