abstract | A method of rapidly assessing the susceptibility of a sample of bacteria to an antibiotic that inhibits protein synthesis, comprising: incubating a first portion of the sample of bacteria experiencing exponential growth with an antibiotic that inhibits the synthesis of proteins; adding an agent to the first portion of the bacterial sample, which is being incubated with the protein synthesis inhibitor antibiotic, where the agent is selected such that it induces a bacterial response, which depends on the synthesis of the protein or is influenced by it; incubating a second portion of the bacterial sample experiencing exponential growth with the selected agent to induce or be influenced by protein synthesis-dependent bacterial response; evaluate the bacterial response in the first portion and the second portion of the bacterial sample and classify the bacterial sample as susceptible or not susceptible to the antibiotic protein synthesis inhibitor, based on the evaluation of the first and second portions of the bacteria sample. |
