abstract A sensor strip (10) configured to perform hemoglobin measurements on a whole blood sample, comprising: a base layer (20) having at least a first electrically conductive layer (21) and a second electrically conductive layer disposed on a surface thereof, characterized in that the sensor strip further comprises a first amount of a reagent composition including at least an effective amount of a hemoglobin sensitive redox mediator and an effective amount of a polymeric binder, preferably oxide of polyethylene, an effective amount of surfactant and at least one buffer in contact with said first electrically conductive layer to define a working electrode (W) and a second amount of a reagent composition that includes an effective amount of a polymeric binder , preferably polyethylene oxide, an effective amount of surfactant and at least one buffer in contact with said second layer electrically conductive to define a reference electrode (R); and a channel that provides communication between said first quantity and said second quantity of the reagent composition; said sensor strip (10) being configured to return a measurable electrical signal indicative of the hemoglobin content of a blood sample in response to an independent application of a variable voltage and a constant voltage through said working electrode (W) and of said reference electrode (R) when said blood sample is in contact with said first and second amounts of reagent composition within said channel.
