abstract A chemiluminescent acridinium compound having the following structure: ** Formula ** in which, R1 is a C1-35 alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl or aralkyl group, each of which may contain up to heteroatoms, or a sulfopropyl group or sulfobutyl, or R1 is a -Ra-Z group; R2 and R3 are independently selected from (i) hydrogen, (ii) an electron donor group selected from OR, OH, SR, SH, NH2 and NRNRN, where R and RN are independently selected at each occurrence and are selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, aryl, and aralkyl, each containing up to 20 heteroatoms, or (iii) a -Z group; Y and Y 'are independently selected from R, -Ra-Z, or -Ra-L; where L is a derivatizable functional group comprising a leaving group to form a conjugate with an analyte, analyte analog, or binding pair for an analyte; Z is a zwitterionic group of form: ** Formula ** X is independently selected at each occurrence from a bond, -CH2-, oxygen, sulfur, -NRN-, amide (-NRN (CO) -), carbamate (-NRNC (O) O-), or urea (-NRNC (O) NRN-); R 'and R "are independently selected at each occurrence from C1-35 alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, aryl, or aralkyl, each containing up to 20 heteroatoms, and a Ra-L group; Z1 is a -Ra-Z2 group where Z2 is selected from carboxylate (-COO-), sulfonate (-SO3 -), sulfate (-OSO3 20 -), phosphate (-OP (O) (OR) (O-)), or oxide (-O-); or , in the case where Z2 is an (-O-) oxide, Ra may be absent; n is, independently selected in each case, an integer from one to 12; and R is independently selected at each occurrence from alkyl groups , alkenyl, alkynyl, aryl, or C1-35 aralkyl each containing up to 20 heteroatoms; RN is independently selected at each occurrence from hydrogen, C1-35 alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, aryl, or aralkyl groups each containing up to 20 heteroatoms; and Ra is a divalent radical selected from an alkylene, alkenylene, alkynylene, arylene, or C1-35 aralkylene group, each containing optionally up to 20 heteroatoms; with the proviso that at least one of R1, R2, R3, Y and Y 'comprises said zwiterionic group Z, in which L is selected from the group consisting of: ** Formula **
