abstract A method for generating droplets in a device comprising: providing a first fluid path (620) comprising a first fluid (622); a second fluid path (615) comprising a second fluid (617); and a third fluid path (610) comprising a third fluid (612); and generating a cavitation bubble (660) in the first fluid path (620), in which the cavitation bubble (660) imparts sufficient velocity to a portion of the second fluid (617) to extrude a droplet comprising a volume controlled (670) of the second fluid (617) in the third fluid path (610); characterized in that there is a flexible membrane (635) interposed between the first fluid path (620) and the second fluid path (615), an opening (630) is provided between the second fluid path (615) and the third path of fluid (610), and the step of generating a cavitation bubble (660) in the first fluid path (620) elastically deforms a portion of the flexible membrane (635) in the second fluid path (615), in the that the elastic deformation of the flexible membrane portion (635) imparts sufficient velocity to a portion of the second fluid (617) to extrude said droplet (670) of the second fluid (617) through the opening (630) and into the third fluid path (610).
