abstract A procedure for determining the risk of death of a subject with heart failure, the procedure comprising: (a) determining a first risk score of severe adverse cardiac episode (MACERS) for a subject with heart failure based, at least in part, on the relationship of a second level of soluble gene 2 expressed for growth stimulation (ST2) in the subject at a second time point (ST2 T1) with a first level of soluble ST2 in the subject at a first time point (ST2 T0), in addition to a weighted Neperian logarithm of a proBNP N-terminal level (NP) in the subject at the second time point (NP T1) according to the following formula: First MACERS> = (ST2 T1 / ST2 T0) + αln ( NP T1), in which α is a weighting factor; (b) determine a second MACERS for a subject based, at least in part, on the relationship of a third level of soluble ST2 in the subject at a third time point (ST2 T2) with ST2 T0, in addition to a weighted Neperian logarithm of a level of NP in the subject at the third time point (NP T2) according to the following formula Second MACERS> = (ST2 T2 / ST2 T0) + αln (NP T2), in which α is a weighting factor; (c) compare the second MACERS with the first MACERS; and (d) determine the risk of death of the subject based on the comparison of the second MACERS with the first MACERS.
