A process for the reduction by hydrogenation, using molecular H2, of a C3-C70 substrate that contains one or two carbonyl or carboxylic functional groups in the corresponding alcohol, or diol, characterized in that said process is carried out in the presence of a base and at least one catalyst or pre-catalyst in the form of an iron complex of formula [Fe (L3) (L ') Ya] (Z) b (1) in which L3 represents a tridentate ligand in which the groups of coordination consist of an amino or imino group and two phosphino groups; L 'represents a CO or a C1-11 isonitrile compound; each Y represents, simultaneously or independently, a hydrogen or halogen atom, a hydroxyl group, or a C1-C6 alkoxy or carboxylic radical or a BH4 or AlH4 group; each Z represents, simultaneously or independently, a halogen atom, a hydroxyl group, or a C1-C6 alkoxy or carboxylic radical or a BH4 or AlH4 group; and (a + b)> = 2 where a 1 or 2. |
