titleOfInvention Vibratory surgical device for the removal of vitreous and other tissues
abstract Ophthalmic surgical device (10) comprising: a casing (12) having a distal end (14) and a proximal end (16); a cannula (18, 130) attached to the distal end (14) of the housing and having a distal tip (20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 80, 90, 110, 122, 134) with at least one port ( 22, 32, 42, 52, 62, 82, 92, 112, 124, 132) in communication with a lumen (19) that extends through the cannula (18, 130) and in communication with a suction line ( 24) in the housing (12) and in which a cross sectional area of the port (22, 32, 42, 52, 62, 82, 92, 112, 124, 132) is less than a cross sectional area of the lumen (19); a vibration source (26) held within the housing (12) to vibrate the distal tip (20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 80, 90, 110, 122, 134) of the cannula (18, 130) to aid in the removal of vitreous and other tissues from a patient's eye; a suction source (152) connected to the suction path (24) to apply negative pressure to the lumen (19) and at least one port (22, 32, 42, 52, 62, 82, 92, 112, 124 , 132) to remove fluids and vitreous and other tissues from the eye; and wherein the vibration source (26) and aspiration source (152) are configured to together create a periodic bi-directional flow of tissue through the port (22, 32, 42, 52, 62, 82, 92, 112 , 124, 132) by actuating the tip at a speed sufficient to cause said periodic bi-directional flow of tissue with an aspiration vacuum applied without creating external cavitation to the distal tip (20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 80, 90, 110 , 122, 134).
