titleOfInvention Detection of the edges of a core using image analysis
abstract An image processing system (100) for digital pathology comprising a processor (105) and a memory coupled to the processor, the memory storing a digital image (702) of a sample of biological tissue and storing instructions executable by computer that, when are executed by the processor, cause the processor to perform operations to discern a cell nucleus boundary in the digital image, said operations comprising: - identifying, by means of the processor, one or more leading edges in the digital image (702) and using the pixels within leading edges identified as leading voting pixels (316); - using, through the processor, a tensor voting field to perform tensor voting operations on pixels (322, 324, 328) in the vicinity of each of the initial voting pixels (316); - accumulating, through the processor, a plurality of votes for each of the neighboring pixels (322, 324, 328) to determine a tensor value for said neighboring pixel (322, 324, 328), indicating the amount of the vote if said pixel neighbor is likely to be an edge pixel of the same core as the initial voting pixel, the tensor value being a sum of all the votes cast by all the initial voting pixels in whose vicinity said neighboring pixel is located (322, 324) ; and - decompose, by the processor, each of the determined tensor values to determine eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the decomposed tensor value; evaluating, by the processor, the determined eigenvalues and eigenvectors to identify refined edge pixels, the refined edge pixels representing the cell nucleus limit; and - generating, by the processor, a prominence edge intensity image (806) selectively comprising the identified refined edge pixels representing the boundary of the cell nucleus.
