| abstract | Thiocolihicine derivatives of the general formula <FORM:0977470/C1/1> (in which A is an alkylene group containing up to 4 carbon atoms, an alkenylene group containing up to 4 carbon atoms or an arylene group containing one or two rings (and their alkali metal salts may be used in the form of an aqueous solution or a suspension for spraying on to cultivated soils or pre-treating seeds for the production of polyploids.ALSO:The invention comprises thiocolchicine derivatives of the general formula <FORM:0977470/C1/1> (wherein A represents an alkylene group containing up to 4 carbon atoms, an alkenylene group containing up to 4 carbon atoms or an arylene group containing one or two rings), their alkali metal salts, and a process for their production by reacting desacetyl-thiocolchine with an acid anhydride and/or acid halide of a dicarboxylic acid HOOC.A.COOH. The salts may subsequently be formed by reaction with an alkali metal hydroxide, carbonate or bicarbonate. The following compounds are specified, N-hemisuccinyl-N-hemiglutaryl, N-hemimaleoyl-, and N-hemiphthalyldesacetylthiocolchine, and their sodium salts. The novel compounds are antimitotic agents and may be formulated in aqueous solution or suspension medium for pharmaceutical use. Specification 763,217 is referred to.ALSO:To produce polyploids, seeds are treated with derivatives of desacetyl thiocolchicine, such as N-(hemisuccinyl)-, N-(hemiglutaryl) N-(hemimaleoyl)-, or N-(hemiphthalyl)- desacetyl thiocolchicine or an alkali metal salt thereof (see Division C2) having anti-mitotic action, e.g. diluted with a solvent such as water or an inert carrier.
