abstract |
Process for recovering lactic acid from an aqueous mixture comprising the steps of: a) providing an aqueous mixture comprising lactic acid and at least 5% by weight of dissolved magnesium chloride, based on the total weight of water and material dissolved in the aqueous mixture; b) extracting the lactic acid from the aqueous mixture in a first organic liquid comprising at least 90% by weight of an organic solvent selected from the group consisting of C5 + ketones, diethyl ether and methyl tert-butyl ether, thus obtaining a solution organic lactic acid and an aqueous waste liquid comprising magnesium chloride; and, c) extracting the lactic acid from the organic solution of lactic acid in an aqueous liquid, thereby obtaining an aqueous solution of lactic acid and a second organic liquid. |
