abstract Exhaled gas measurement and analysis apparatus for measuring the concentration of carbon dioxide 13CO2 or the ratio of concentrations of carbon dioxide 13CO2 to carbon dioxide 12CO2 by introducing a human exhalation including carbon dioxide 13CO2 and carbon dioxide of carbon 12CO2 as component gases in a cell (11) and measuring the intensities of light transmitted through the cell (11) having wavelengths at which light is transmitted through the respective component gases, followed by a data processing based thereon, the apparatus comprising: a gas inlet container (21) for injecting human exhalation collected in an expandable and contractible breathing bag into the cell (11); a first valve (V3, V4) to communicate the breathing bag with the gas inlet container (21); a second valve (V2) to communicate the gas inlet container (21) with the cell (11); valve actuating means for actuating the first valve (V3, V4) and the second valve (V2); a pressure sensor (16) to measure the pressure inside the cell (11); gas inlet container driving means for sucking a predetermined volume of the exhalation into the gas inlet container (21); pressure measurement means for measuring the gas pressure inside the cell (11) by the pressure sensor (16), the cell (11) being in communication with the gas inlet container (21) through the second valve (V2), when the first valve (V3, V4) is closed; measurement and analysis means for performing measurement and analysis of exhaled gas; wherein the apparatus is configured to perform the following: the pressure of the exhalation in the gas inlet container (21) is measured by the pressure measurement means; if the pressure measured by the pressure measuring means is lower than atmospheric pressure, then it is judged that the amount of the exhalation collected in the breathing bag is insufficient and the measurement is aborted; if the pressure measured by the pressure measuring means is equal to atmospheric pressure, then the gas inlet container is squeezed and the cell (11) is filled with exhalation.
