abstract | A device (18) for detecting plaque on a surface (62) of the oral cavity, said device comprising: a. a radiation source (22) configured to direct incident radiation onto said surface (62) of said oral cavity, b. optical collectors configured to collect reflected light and fluorescent emission, c. optical paths (24a) configured to transport said collected reflected light (33) and said collected fluorescent emission (34) in said device, d. means (46, 48) configured to convert an optical light signal from said reflected light and said fluorescent emission to an electrical signal, e. means (56) configured to mathematically manipulate said electrical signal of said reflected light and said fluorescent emission to determine a plate offset value; and f. means (26) configured to clean said surface of said oral cavity, characterized in that said plaque value is a plaque offset value, where the plaque offset value takes into account a distance between the optical collector and the surface of the oral cavity to that the plate compensated value determined for said surface of said oral cavity is the same regardless of the distance between the optical collectors and the surface of the oral cavity and the distance between the radiation source and the surface of the oral cavity, where said means configured to clean are effective to clean teeth by sonication or pressurized water or any combination thereof with brushing. |
