abstract |
A system for real-time monitoring of the placement of an endotracheal tube, comprising: an endotracheal tube comprising a sleeve; an optical component positioned in the sleeve of the endotracheal tube and adapted to emit light towards the tissue surrounding the trachea into which it is inserted from the endotracheal tube, in order to induce ultrasonic pressure waves inside the tissue; an external acoustic detector adapted to receive the induced ultrasonic pressure waves in the tissue; and an analyzer in electrical communication with the acoustic detector, where the analyzer is adapted to produce an output based on the received ultrasonic pressure waves, which indicates whether or not the endotracheal tube cuff is properly positioned inside the trachea. |
