abstract The invention comprises compounds of the general formula <FORM:0936764/IV(a)/1> and nontoxic acid addition (including penicillin) and nontoxic lower alkyl quaternary ammonium salts thereof, wherein R1 and R2 are phenyl halophenyl, lower-alkoxyphenol, thienyl, furyl, pyridyl, cyclohexyl or cyclopentyl groups, R3 and R5 are hydrogen atoms or lower alkyl groups and Y is an alkylene group of not more than 5 carbon atoms, and pharmaceutical compositions comprising the above compounds and a pharmaceutical carrier. The compounds of the invention may be prepared by catalytic hydrogenation of the 4-benzyl piperazinoalkyl glycolates. "Lower" indicates 1-5-carbon atoms in the groups so qualified. Pharmaceutical compositions may be formulated as powders, tablets, capsules and solutions.
