A method for manufacturing aerosol-forming rods (2020) that have predetermined cross-sectional porosity and cross-sectional porosity distribution values for use as aerosol-forming substrates in heated aerosol-generating articles (2000, 2001, 2002), the method comprises the steps of: providing a continuous sheet of aerosol forming material (2) having a specific width and a specific thickness, gathering the continuous sheet of aerosol forming material transversely with respect to the longitudinal axis thereof , circumscribe the continuous gathered sheet of aerosol forming material with a wrapper (12) to form a continuous rod, cut the continuous rod into a plurality of separate rods, determine representative values of the porosity in the cross section and the distribution of the porosity in the cross section for at least one of the separate rods, and control ar one or more manufacturing parameters to ensure that the porosity values in the cross section and distribution of the porosity in the cross section of subsequent rods are within the predetermined values to produce the aerosol forming rods |
