abstract A process for the conversion of lignocellulose into an organic acid, in which the process comprises the following steps: a) pretreatment of a feed comprising lignocellulose material, with an alkaline agent comprising a divalent calcium or magnesium cation, in the presence of water at a pretreatment temperature, to obtain an aqueous paste of lignocellulose material with alkaline pretreatment; b) supply of at least part of the paste of lignocellulose material with alkaline pretreatment to a fermentation zone and submission of the pretreated lignocellulose material, in the fermentation zone in the presence of a hydrolytic enzyme and a microorganism that is capable of converting saccharides in an organic acid, enzymatic hydrolysis and fermentation to obtain a fermentation broth comprising insoluble lignocellulose, precipitated and dissolved salt of the organic acid with the divalent cation, and enzyme; c) discharge of the fermentation zone from the fermentation broth obtained in step (b); d) separation of the fermentation broth, from a liquid phase comprising the dissolved salt of the organic acid and a solid phase comprising insoluble lignocellulose and the precipitated salt of the organic acid; and e) recycling of at least part of the liquid phase to step a) of alkaline pretreatment and / or to the fermentation zone.
