titleOfInvention A PROCEDURE FOR THE PRODUCTION OF DIALYL PHTHALATE IN A SINGLE PHASE
abstract Diallylic phthalates are prepared by simultaneously reacting a phthalic acid or anhydride thereof with sodium carbonate and an allylic halide in the molar ratio 1:1:2 in the presence of a tertiary amine or a quaternary ammonium salt as catalyst and under substantially anhydrous conditions. In an example a mixture of phthalic anhydride, sodium carbonate, methallyl chloride and triethylamine is refluxed for 15 hours, cooled, filtered to remove sodium chloride, heated to remove unreacted methallyl chloride and finally distilled to give dimethallyl phthalate. Diallyl phthalate and diallyl isophthalate are prepared in further examples the further reactants and catalysts specified being isophthalic acid allyl chloride methyldiethylamine, allyltriethylammonium chloride, dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide and cetylbenzyldimethylammonium chloride. Hydroquinone (antioxidant) and 2,21-methylenebis (4-methyl -6-tert-butylphenol) (polymerisation inhibitor) are also present in the reaction mixture in some examples.
