titleOfInvention Improved use of energy in a solution polymerization plant
abstract An improved continuous solution polymerization process in which energy consumption is reduced, comprising: i) injecting ethylene, one or more aliphatic hydrocarbon solvents, a catalyst, optionally one or more α-olefins and optionally hydrogen in at least one upstream reactor that operates at a temperature and pressure to produce an ethylene polymer in a single liquid phase solution; ii) injecting a catalyst deactivator, downstream of said reactors upstream, into the single liquid phase solution containing ethylene, solvents, catalyst, ethylene polymer, optional α-olefins and optional hydrogen, to form a deactivated reactor solution ; iii) passing the deactivated reactor solution through a heat exchanger to increase the temperature, then reduce the pressure, then produce in a V / L separator a bottom stream of solvents rich in ethylene polymer, deactivated catalyst and α- optional olefins and a gaseous head stream of ethylene, solvents, oligomers, optional α-olefins and optional hydrogen; iv) pass no more than 40% of the gaseous head stream to a distillation column; v) passing the rest of the gaseous head stream through a halide removal column, followed by condensation of the gaseous head stream reducing the temperature, to form a condensed head stream; vi) passing the condensed head stream through a means for the elimination of oligomers, producing a cold recycle stream; vii) pass the cold recycle stream through a light component separator to remove volatile components to produce a purged recycle stream; viii) pass the purged recycle stream through at least two purification vessels, producing a purified recycle stream; ix) collect the purified recycle stream in a recycle drum, pass the purified recycle stream through a pump and inject a high pressure recycle stream into said upstream reactors.
