abstract | An apparatus (200) for treatment by non-invasive transmission of electromagnetic radiation to a target region of biological tissue, said apparatus comprising: a main unit (205) including a source of electromagnetic radiation; a controller for selecting at least one parameter of the electromagnetic radiation based on at least one of a depth and a thickness of the target region; a transmission system (210) for transmitting the electromagnetic radiation through a biological tissue surface to the target region, and the electromagnetic radiation induces within the target region a subsurface thermal injury characterized by a desired degree and a desired depth, including the transmission system (210) a fiber (215) having a circular cross-section and a knob (220), the electromagnetic radiation from the source being transmitted by the fiber (215) to the knob (220); a cooling system for cooling at least a portion of the surface to mitigate substantial unwanted thermal injury to the surface; and said apparatus is characterized in that it further comprises an ultrasonic detector for determining the depth and thickness of the target region, wherein the controller is configured to select the duration of a pulse of electromagnetic radiation based on the depth and thickness of the target region, determined by the ultrasonic detector, and a cooling time and a cooling temperature for cooling the portion of the surface to treat the target region 20 by inducing subsurface thermal injury. |
