titleOfInvention Method and apparatus for the automated identification of platelets in a whole blood sample from microscope images
abstract A method of identifying platelets (52) within a whole blood sample, comprising: adding at least one dye to the whole blood sample, which dye can mark platelets (52); placing the blood sample in a chamber (24) defined by at least one transparent panel (26, 28); capturing the image of at least a portion of the sample that resides quiescently within the chamber (24) to create one or more images; and identifying one or more platelets (52) within the sample using an analyzer adapted to identify platelets (52) based on quantitatively determinable characteristics within the image using an analyzer, quantitatively determinable characteristics including intensity differences; wherein the identification step includes representing an intensity of the plasma in the image.
