abstract An in vitro method for determining a level of activity of Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteria in the lung of a patient, the method comprising: performing a first measurement at a first time of a level of at least one marker of a bacterial iron sequestration process and of at least one bacterial protein secreted in a sample of sputum of the lung; performing a second measurement at a second time of the levels of said marker and said bacterial protein secreted in a sample of lung sputum; and determining said level of bacterial activity from the changes in said measured levels of said marker of a bacterial iron sequestration process and said bacterial protein secreted over time, wherein the marker of a bacterial iron sequestration process It is a siderophore and the secreted bacterial protein is exotoxin A.
