abstract Sterile pharmaceutical composition comprising an effective preservative amount of a compound of the following formula, ** Formula ** in which: R1 and R3 are (C1-C6) alkyl; R2 is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen and (C1-C16) alkyl optionally substituted with NHC (> = O) - (CH2) 10CH3 or NHC (> = OHCH2) 12CH3; R4 is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen and CH2CH (Y) CH2N + R1R2R3X, in which R1, R2, and R3, are as defined above; X is halo; Y is selected from the group consisting of OH, O-C1-C10 alkyl and O-alkenyl (C1-C10); M is selected from the group consisting of sodium and potassium; a physiologically suitable buffer, and a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier therefor, in which the composition has an ionic strength of not more than 0.12, in which the amount of the compound of formula (I) is 0.001% (w / v) at 0.005% (w / v), and whose composition does not contain other antimicrobial agents.
