abstract A method for isolating a bioactive fraction that is derived from fresh biomass cell juice from a feverfew plant (Tanacetum parthenium) and that is substantially free of α-unsaturated γ-lactones, said method comprising: providing fresh biomass from a feverfew plant (Tanacetum parthenium); processing the fresh biomass under conditions effective to produce a cell juice supernatant ie at least substantially free of α-unsaturated γ-lactones and a membrane fraction containing γ-lactones α-unsaturated, said processing of the fresh biomass comprises: (i) separating the fresh biomass into a cell juice component and a fiber-enriched material; and (ii) subjecting the cell juice component to a pH adjustment and microwave treatment step to produce the cell juice supernatant ie at least substantially free of α-unsaturated γ-lactones; treating the cell juice supernatant under conditions effective to produce a first cell juice serum supernatant and a cytoplasm fraction precipitate; and isolating the cytoplasmic fraction precipitate, wherein said cytoplasmic fraction precipitate is a bioactive fraction that is substantially free of α-unsaturated γ-lactones, wherein said α-unsaturated γ-lactones comprise parthenolide.
