titleOfInvention Optical devices for selective and conventional photocoagulation of retinal pigment epithelium
abstract An apparatus (101) for applying radiation to a subject's retina, comprising: a radiation source (110) for generating a radiation beam having one or more wavelengths suitable for absorption by retinal pigment epithelial cells, at least one optical component to direct the beam onto the retina, a scanner (120) optically coupled to the source (110) to controllably move the beam in two dimensions to scan the beam onto the retina, a controller (130) in communicating with the scanner (120) to apply control signals thereto to adjust the movement of the beam to illuminate a plurality of retinal locations in a time sequence in accordance with a scan pattern, in which the controller (130) is capable of operating the scanner (120) in at least two scanning modes, a first of the scanning modes being suitable for the selective determination of retinal pigment epithelial cells (RPE) and a second being suitable nd of scan modes to produce thermal photocoagulation in the retina; and a user interface (170) configured to allow a user to select between the first and second scan modes, wherein the controller (130) is configured to set a scan pattern, a number of repetitions of the scan pattern , a residence time, and a beam fluence to selectively determine RPE cells or for thermal photocoagulation, characterized in that the first scanning mode comprises the beam that imparts to the retina one of: (i) a fluence equal to or less than about 10,000 mJ / cm2 in a separate line pattern; and (ii) a fluence equal to or less than about 2,000 mJ / cm2 in an interlaced line pattern; and wherein the second scan mode comprises the beam imparting to the retina one of: (iii) a fluence greater than about 10,000 mJ / cm2 and a beam dwell time greater than about 50 microseconds in a separate line pattern ; and (iv) a fluence greater than about 2,000 mJ / cm2 and a beam dwell time greater than about 15 microseconds in an interlaced line pattern.
