abstract An aerosol composition for use in a method of increasing the permeability of the external auditory canal of mammals, simultaneously providing protection against the appearance of external otitis within it, comprising administering a dose of a mixture of lipid crystals through an auditory meatus of a mammal, said mixture being composed of at least one lipid surfactant in an amount effective to reduce the surface tension of an air/liquid interface resident in the epithelial tissue lining said external auditory canal, at least one dispersing agent in an amount effective to distribute said surfactant over said interface and at least one propellant in which said surfactants and dispersing agents are not soluble, said dispersing agents being selected from the class consisting of diacylphosphatidylserine, sphingomeline, cardiolipin, cholesteryl esters , lysophospholipids, plasmalogens, di alkyl phospholipids, diether phosphonolipids, carbohydrates and proteins, all in powder form and said lipidic surfactant being 1,2-dipalmitoyl phosphatidylcholine, also in powder form.
