abstract Surface layer for the formation of a sliding surface on a cylinder wall, the surface layer presenting separate phases of components that are separated from the phase or phases of the other surface materials, characterized in that the surface layer is produced by plasma projection of a ferrous projection powder containing all the components, and because the surface layer has the following components: Fe> = difference to 100% by weight Cr> = 0.1 to 18.0% by weight Mn> = 0.1 a 6.0% by weight S> = 0.01 to 0.5% by weight C> = 0.1 to 1.2% by weight and has one or more of the following components: As> = 0.001 to 0.1 % by weight Te> = 0.001 to 0.1% by weight Se> = 0.001 to 0.1% by weight Sb> = 0.001 to 0.1% by weight Bi> = 0.001 to 0.1% by weight or Pb> = 0.01 to 0.5% by weight.
