abstract A method for optically analyzing rare cells suspended in a fluid medium using a blood sample from a patient suspected of having cancer, wherein the method comprises: a. mixing said blood sample with ferrofluid particles bound to an antibody specific for the EpCAM antigen on the surface of the epithelial cells; b. separating unbound ferrofluid from bound ferrofluid; and c. visualize the magnetically responsive components in the blood sample using time delay integration in a viewing chamber, where said components are evenly distributed within the preformed alignment structure along the viewing surface on the inner surface of the optically transparent face of said chamber.
