abstract | A continuous process of preparing a brominated styrenic polymer having a bromine content of at least 60% by weight after a bromination time of 20 minutes or less, a process which comprises maintaining the reaction mixture formed in a reaction zone continuously from (i) a bromination agent, (ii) a solution formed from a solvent and a styrenic polymer prepared by anionic polymerization and (iii) an aluminum halide catalyst in which the halogen atoms are bromine or chlorine, at least one of such halogen atoms being a bromine atom, in which (i), (ii), and (iii) are fed continuously but separately from each other, a mixture of (i) and (iii) and separately (ii) are fed continuously, or a mixture of (ii) and (iii) and separately (i) are fed continuously, at one or more temperatures in the range of -20 at +20 ÂșC and finish the polymerization in the reaction mixture that continually exits the reaction zone. |
