A method for thermally processing a tobacco material, comprising: (i) mixing a tobacco material, water, a buffering agent that buffers in a pH range of about 6 to about 10 and an additive capable of inhibiting the reaction of asparagine to form acrylamide, to form a wet tobacco mixture, the additive being selected from the group consisting of amino acids, asparaginase, oxidizing agents and combinations thereof; (ii) heating the wet tobacco mixture to a temperature of at least about 60 ° C to form a heat treated tobacco composition, the heat treated tobacco composition having an acrylamide content of less than about 2000 ppb, where the pH of the wet tobacco mixture during the heating stage is less than about 10; and (iii) use the heat treated tobacco composition in a tobacco product. |
