abstract A ferric iron composition for use in a hyperphosphatemia treatment method, wherein the ferric iron composition is a solid material of poly oxo-hydroxy metal ions, modified with ligand represented by the formula (MxLy (OH) n), in which M represents one or more metal ions comprising Fe3 + ions, L represents one or more ligands comprising adipic acid or an ionized form thereof and OH represents oxo or hydroxy groups and wherein the material has a polymeric structure in which the L ligands non-stoichiometrically replace the oxo or hydroxy groups, so that part of the ligand is integrated into the solid phase by formal metal-ligand (ML) bonding and where the solid metal-modified metal oxo-hydroxy ion material ligand has one or more reproducible physicochemical properties.
