abstract |
A process for the synthesis of a bioceramic composition for biomedical applications and comprising calcium phosphosilicate (CPS, Ca10(PO4)4(SiO4)2), where calcium phosphosilicate (CPS) is present in an amount of 50% by weight or more , where the secondary phase or phases comprise or comprise: (a) hydroxyapatite; or (b) one or more than one or more of alpha-tricalcium phosphate, an alpha-tricalcium phosphate phase, beta-tricalcium phosphate or and/or a beta-tricalcium phosphate phase; or (c) (i) hydroxyapatite; and one or both of (ii) alpha-tricalcium phosphate and/or an alpha-tricalcium phosphate phase; and/or (iii) beta-tricalcium phosphate or and/or a beta-tricalcium phosphate phase, the process comprising: providing calcium or a calcium-containing compound, a phosphorous-containing compound and a silicon-containing compound; form a precipitate by reacting the compounds in an aqueous phase at alkaline pH; and heating the precipitate at a temperature of 1000 to 1600°C for 1 to 120 hours. |
