abstract | A method of manufacturing a water-in-water polymer dispersion comprising subjecting an aqueous reaction mixture comprising (i) a cationic polymeric dispersing agent and (ii) a monomeric composition comprising a) at least 5% by weight of a monomer nonionic according to the general formula (I) ** Formula ** wherein R1 means hydrogen or C1-C3 alkyl; and R2 and R3 mean, independently of one another, hydrogen, C1-C5 alkyl or hydroxy C1-C5 alkyl; based on the total weight of the monomers; b) at least 5% by weight of a cationic monomer according to the general formula (II) ** Formula ** wherein R4 means hydrogen or C1-C3 alkyl; Z1 means O or NR5, R5 being hydrogen or C1-C3 alkyl; Y0 means C2-C6 alkylene, optionally substituted with one or more hydroxy groups; Y1, Y2, Y3, independently of each other, means C1-C5 alkyl; and X- means halogen, pseudo-halogen, acetate or SO4CH3 -; based on the total weight of the monomers; c) from 0.0001 to 1.25% by weight of one or more crosslinkers, based on the total weight of the monomers; and d) optionally, additional ethylenically unsaturated monomers; for a free radical polymerization reaction so that the resulting water-in-water polymer dispersion contains a cross-linked cationic copolymer; wherein the aqueous reaction mixture does not contain hydrophobic monomers. |
