titleOfInvention Removal of residual sulfur compounds from a caustic stream
abstract A process for treating a caustic stream enriched in mercaptan, comprising, in combination, a) introducing a caustic stream enriched containing mercaptan compounds in an oxidation device (10); b) oxidize the mercaptan compounds to disulfide oil (ADS) at a conversion level of 90% or higher in the presence of an oxidant and form a mixture comprising ADS and caustic, and residual mercaptans; c) extracting the mixture formed in step b) of the oxidation device (10) and introducing the mixture into a separation device (14); d) separating a substantial part of the ADS from the caustic in the separation device (14) allowing the mixture to form two distinct liquid layers, a lower layer (23) comprising a caustic phase and an upper layer (22) comprising a phase of ADS, in a collection area (21); e) extracting the ADS phase from the separation device (14) by removing the upper layer (22) and extracting the caustic phase containing less than 500 ppm by weight of sulfur compounds from the separation device (14) by removing the lower layer ( 2. 3); f) introduce the caustic current of step e) as a feed current into a polishing unit (24) containing a bed of activated carbon; g) adsorb on the activated carbon the disulfides introduced into the polishing unit (24) as part of the sulfur compounds in the caustic current of step f); and h) extracting from the polishing unit (24) a product of refined caustic current comprising less than 20 ppm by weight (as sulfur) of sulfur compounds.
