Absorbent and mechanically resistant non-woven fiber mats |
abstract |
A device that retains liquid comprising: an absorbent component; and an elastomeric and hydrophilic fibrous component, wherein the absorbent component and the elastomeric and hydrophilic fibrous component are in physical proximity which thus results in fluid communication of the elastomeric and hydrophilic fibrous component to the absorbent component; wherein the absorbent component is more absorbent than the elastomeric and hydrophilic fibrous component but where the elastomeric and hydrophilic fibrous component absorbs more rapidly and has a lower retention capacity than the absorbent component; wherein the absorbent component is distributed in a selected form of coated on the surface of the elastomeric and hydrophilic fibrous component, mechanically intermingled by the elastomeric and hydrophilic fibrous component, and a combination thereof; and wherein the elastomeric and hydrophilic fibrous component comprises electro-spun fibers with a diameter of 1 to 3000 nanometers. |
