titleOfInvention Blades with functional balance asymmetries for use with ultrasonic surgical instruments
abstract An ultrasonic retention coagulator (120) comprising: a housing (130), said housing (130) comprising an actuator; an external tube (160) having a proximal end attached to said housing, and a distal end, said external tube (160) defining a longitudinal axis. a drive element reciprocally positioned within said outer tube (160), said drive element operatively connected to said actuator; an ultrasonic waveguide (179) positioned within said outer tube (160), said ultrasonic waveguide having a curved end effector (180) defining a vertical plane of asymmetry (181) extending distally from said distal end of said outer tube (160), wherein said end effector (180) comprises a wide edge (56) and a narrow edge (55), wherein said narrow edge (55) is defined by the intersection of a first surface ( 53) and a second surface (57), in which said first surface (53) is concave and said second surface (57) is convex and in which said first surface extends proximally from the distal end in said end effector (180 ) defining a length of said first surface; and an arm (202) of the caliper pivotally mounted on said distal end of said outer tube (160) for pivotal movement with respect to said end effector (180) for retaining tissue between said caliper arm (202) and said effector end (180), said pivoting movement taking place on a horizontal axis, the arc of said pivoting movement of said clamp arm (202) defined in said vertical plane, said vertical plane having an orthogonal vertical axis to both said longitudinal axis and said horizontal axis, said clamp arm (202) operatively connected to said drive element such that the reciprocal movement of said drive element pivots said clamp arm (202) along said vertical plane; wherein said wide edge (56) is round and blunt, to provide a wide edge (56) for retaining tissues between it and the clamp arm (202), and said narrow edge (55) is for cutting without retention; wherein said length of said first surface is selected to balance said waveguide (179) providing a functional asymmetry such that the path proximal to said functional asymmetry of said end effector (180) along said vertical axis is Limit to less than 15%.
