titleOfInvention | Inspection of materials by evaluation of the contribution of the Bragg dispersion to the X-ray absorption spectra |
abstract | A method of obtaining radiation transmission data from an object, comprising the steps of: providing a source (1) of high energy ionizing electromagnetic radiation and a separate radiation detecting system (21; 3a, 3b, 3c) from it to define an exploration zone (Z) between the two, the detector system being capable of detecting and collecting spectroscopically resolvable information about the incident radiation; collecting a data set of information about the radiation incident on the detector, and hence the transmissivity of an object in the scanning area, at least one and preferably at a multiplicity of scanning positions from the transmitted radiation through the object and received in the detector system (21; 3a, 3b, 3c); spectroscopically solving each such data set across a multiplicity of frequency bands (b1 to b5; c1 to c3) within the source spectrum; where at least one of said multiplicity of frequency bands corresponds to a characteristic Bragg dispersion wavelength of a target species to be identified, and where the reduction of the amplitude of the intensity of the signal transmitted in the band characteristic frequency is determined numerically by comparison with the spectrum of a known source and / or with reference to the data of the transmitted intensity in the vicinity of the characteristic frequency band, and as a consequence a result is generated that indicates the presence of said target species. |
