A population of cells derived from human umbilical cord tissue, in which said cell population is capable of self-renewal and expansion in culture, has the potential to differentiate into cells of other phenotypes, is obtainable by isolating in the presence of metalloproteases, proteases neutral and mucolytic enzyme activities of blood-free human umbilical cord tissue, and in which the cells: a) each produce CD10, CD13, CD44, CD73, CD90, PDGFr-alpha and HLA-A, B, C , as detected by flow cytometry; and b) they do not each produce CD31, CD34, CD45, CD117, CD141 or HLA-DR, DP, DQ, as detected by flow cytometry. |
