abstract Imidazolium salts of the general formula I, ** Formula ** in which b, I, m, n and optionally q are the same or different and are in each case, independently of one another, zero or 1; and X- is an anion; R1 and R2 are the same or different and open chain, branched or unbranched or are present as a component of a ring or ring system and are selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, n-C1-C12 alkyl moiety, branched alkyl moiety C3-C12, C3-C12 cycloalkyl radical, C2-C12 alkenyl radical, C7-C20 arylalkyl radical, C5-C14 aryl radical, which, in turn, is substituted in the same or different way with one or more C1- alkyl radicals C3 branched or unbranched, the ring and aromatic systems being single-membered rings or isolated or fused multi-membered rings or forming a ring system with the imidazole ring of the structure according to formula I; R3 is selected from the group consisting of -NH2, -COOH, -CONH2 and -COOR "moiety, wherein R" is a n-C1-C6 alkyl moiety; R4 is hydrogen or R5, R5 being an imidazole ring of formula II, ** Formula ** wherein q is zero or 1; R6 is the same as or different from R1 and R2 and is selected from the same group as R1, R2.
