titleOfInvention Materials and procedures to improve properties of emulsions and SPD films
abstract A film for use in a suspended particulate device (SPD), said film comprises a crosslinked matrix polymer having a plurality of droplets of a light valve liquid suspension distributed therein, formed with the use of a emulsifier, said emulsifier is a separate emulsifier formed by a copolymer material comprising at least the first and second segments, said segments differ from each other in at least one of their chemical affinities, their compositions and their polarities, being a first segment of the mentioned segments soluble in an uncured liquid matrix polymer used in the formation of the film, but insoluble in a liquid suspending medium in which the mentioned droplets are dispersed, and a second segment of the mentioned segments being soluble in the liquid suspending medium droplet and insoluble in the uncured liquid matrix polymer, in which the first and second segments have an indic refractive e within 0.010 of each other and in which the refractive index of said segments is within 0.010 of each phase of an emulsion formed with said emulsifier, said first segment comprising a material selected from the group that consists of linear organosiloxanes, branched organosiloxanes, linear alkyl groups, branched alkyl groups, linear fluoroalkyl groups, and branched fluoroalkyl groups, and wherein the first segment of the emulsifying copolymer consisting of a polyorganosiloxane polymer having pendant phenyl groups to provide an index of refraction at 25 degrees centigrade in the range of 1.4630 to 1.4800, and the second mentioned segment comprises a material selected from the group consisting of linear esters, branched esters, linear (meth) acrylate, branched (meth) acrylate, amide linear, branched amide, linear amine, branched amine, linear epoxy groups, branched epoxy groups, linear groups comprising hydroxyl or acid groups and branched groups comprising hydroxyl or acid groups, wherein said emulsifier is adapted to prevent the coalescence of the droplets of the liquid light valve suspension during the formation of said film by retarding the growth of the mentioned droplets.
