abstract A device (100) comprising a substrate (102) and a plurality of nanowires (110) deposited on said substrate (102), at least a part of said plurality of nanowires (110) comprises nanowires (104) having a first functional moiety thereto and at least one other part of said plurality of nanowires comprises nanowires (106) that have a second functional moiety attached thereto, said first and second functional moieties being different; characterized in that: each of said first and second functional moieties are adapted to interact with the nitro containing explosive by forming a charge transfer complex, so that upon contact with a sample containing a nitro containing explosive , the plurality of nanowires (110) exhibits a detectable change in an electrical property, said change being indicative of the presence and / or amount of said nitro-containing explosive in said sample, and being indicative in addition to the chemical composition of the explosive it contains nitro, in which each of said first and second functional moieties is independently an electron donor moiety and in which the length of each of said first and second functional moieties is less than 2 nm.
