abstract |
A method for producing electrolytic manganese dioxide (EMD) that has a high discharge capacity at high discharge rates by electrolysis in an electrolytic cell that has cathodic and anodic electrodes placed therein comprising the steps of: maintaining an aqueous electrolytic solution comprising sulfuric acid at a concentration of 20 to 60 grams of sulfuric acid per liter of solution, and manganese sulfate in the electrolytic cell at a temperature of 95 ° C to 98 ° C, solution having manganese sulfate therein in an amount sufficient to provide manganese ions in an amount of 5 to 50 grams of manganese ions per liter of solution; maintain the amount of sulfuric acid and manganese ions in the electrolyte solution at a ratio of sulfuric acid to manganese ions greater than or equal to 2; and applying electrical current to the electrodes to provide an anodic electrode current density of 26.9 to 64.5 amps / m2 (2.5 to 6 amp / ft2) and the high discharge capacity EMD produced is deposited in the anode electrode. |
