titleOfInvention Improved process for the manufacture of copolyether glycol
abstract A process for manufacturing copolyether glycol having an average molecular weight, as measured by 1H NMR according to ASTM D 4875, from 650 daltons to 500 daltons comprising the steps of: a) polymerizing tetrahydrofuran and at least one oxide of alkylene in the presence of an acid catalyst and at least one compound containing reactive hydrogen atoms at a temperature of from 50 ° C to 80 ° C to produce a polymerization product mixture comprising oligomeric cyclic ethers, polyether glycol, at least one dimer of alkylene oxide, linear short chain copolyether glycol and tetrahydrofuran; b) separating a majority of the tetrahydrofuran and the alkylene oxide dimer from the polymerization product mixture of step a) to produce a mixture of crude product comprising oligomeric cyclic ethers, copolyether glycol and linear short chain copolyether glycol ; c) separating at least a portion of the oligomeric cyclic ethers and the linear short chain copolyether glycol from the crude product mixture of step b) to produce an ECO stream comprising oligomeric cyclic ethers and short chain copolyether glycol linear, and a product stream comprising copolyether glycol; and d) recycle at least a portion of the ECO stream of stage c) for the polymerization stage a); wherein said copolyether glycol is a tetrahydrofuran copolymer and at least one alkylene oxide, and wherein the term oligomeric cyclic ether excludes the alkylene oxide dimer.
