abstract A process for the dimerization of 5-acetamido-N, N'-bis (2,3-dihydroxypropyl) -2,4,6-triiodo-isophthalamide (compound A) in a temperature range of 10 to 20 ° C using propylene glycol as solvent in a concentration of 0.8 to 1.3 ml of solvent per g of compound A, in the presence of 0.3 to 0.4 molar equivalents of epichlorohydrin with respect to compound A, and wherein the reaction solution it has a pH value of 11.5 to 12.0, so that the pH varies throughout the dimerization, having a higher value at the beginning of the dimerization than at the end of it.
