Process for the preparation of alcohols by hydrogenation of carbonyl compounds, characterized in that the hydrogenation is carried out in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst that is composed of a support material and at least one active metal for hydrogenation, being based the support material in titanium dioxide, zirconium dioxide, aluminum oxide, silicon oxide or its mixed oxides and the active metal for hydrogenation being at least one element taken from the assembly consisting of copper, cobalt, nickel and chromium, the support material containing the barium element, the content of the barium compound being calculated, calculated as barium oxide, based on the reduced catalyst, in the range of 0.1 to 2% by mass, in particular in the range of 0, 3 to 0.7% by mass. |
