abstract A process for preparing a compound having a structure of Formula (IV): Formula III Formula IV ** Formula ** in which: R1 and R2 are independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, halogen, hydroxy, alkoxy, cyano, hydrocarbyl, substituted hydrocarbyl and NRcRd, wherein each of Rc and Rd is independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, hydroxy and hydrocarbyl; R3 and R5 are independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, hydrocarbyl and substituted hydrocarbyl; R4 is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, acyl, trialkylsilyl, tertiary alkyl, substituted methyl aryl, and alkoxycarbonyl; -OR6 is a substituent at C5 or C7 and R6 is selected from hydrogen, alkyl, and acyl; and, the dashed bond between carbon atoms C7 and C8 indicates the optional presence of a carbon double carbon bond; the process comprising contacting the compound of Formula (III) with a super acid to form a bond between the oxygen atom of the substituent -OR4 and the carbon atom C5 to form a furan ring, in which the molar ratio of the compound having the structure of Formula (III) to the super acid is from 1:10 to 1:50, in which the term "alkyl" refers to groups containing up to 20 carbon atoms in the main chain, whose chain it can be straight or branched or cyclic, and the term "alkenyl" and "alkynyl" describes groups containing up to 20 carbon atoms in the main chain, and at least one double bond (alkenyl) or triple bond (alkynyl) carbon-carbon , whose chain can be straight or branched or cyclic.
