abstract | Process for the preparation of an alkanediol and a dialkyl carbonate, comprising: (a) Reacting an alkylene carbonate and an alkanol in the presence of a transesterification catalyst to obtain a reaction mixture comprising a dialkyl carbonate, the alkanol unconverted, an alkanediol, the unconverted alkylene carbonate and an alkoxy-alkanol type impurity; (b) Subject the reaction mixture to distillation in a first distillation column to obtain a head stream comprising dialkyl carbonate, alkanol and alkoxy alkanol type impurity, and a tail stream comprising alkanediol and alkylene carbonate; (c) Distilling the tail stream of the first distillation column in a second distillation column to obtain a head stream comprising alkanediol and a tail stream comprising alkylene carbonate; (d) Subject the head stream of the first distillation column to distillation in a third distillation column in the presence of a catalyst to effect the reaction of the alkoxy-alkanol type impurity with the dialkyl carbonate to give an impurity ether carbonate type , to obtain a head current comprising the alkanol and a tail current comprising the dialkyl carbonate and the impurity ether carbonate type; and (e) Subjecting the tail stream of the third distillation column to distillation in a fourth distillation column to obtain a head stream comprising dialkyl carbonate and a tail stream comprising dialkyl carbonate and the type impurity carbonate ether; and (f) Recycle the tail current from the fourth distillation column to the first distillation column. |
