titleOfInvention Partially continuous process for emulsion polymerization
abstract Process for the preparation of aqueous polymeric dispersions by means of emulsion polymerization initiated in radicals, in a liquid medium, of vinyl ester and ethylene and possibly other ethylenically unsaturated comonomers, in polymerization reactors connected in series, characterized in that in a first phase of Batch polymerization, at least in part, the precursors for the polymerization are placed in the first polymerization reactor, and the rest is metered in, the polymerization being carried out at a pressure p of 5 to 120 bar abs. and at a temperature T from 20 ° C to 120 ° C, and in the case of a degree of reactor load greater than 90% by vol. and a conversion of at least 90% by weight of the monomers used until then, in a second phase of continuous polymerization the precursors are continuously supplied to the first polymerization reactor and product is continuously withdrawn and the product is continuously transferred to a second reactor of polymerization, where as of this moment the metered addition of precursor and the withdrawal of product in the first polymerization reactor are controlled so that these amounts correspond to each other, and in the second polymerization reactor the polymerization continues at a pressure p of <5 bar abs. up to a conversion of at least 98% by weight of the monomers used, based on the total weight of the amount of monomers used in the process.
